Day 39 – To Become an Asset to Our Planet – Sharepack Making Take Away Cleaner

Waste free take away, is that even possible?

Day 39

Take away seems like something I need to avoid if I don’t want to produce a lot of waste. It is the packaging of food I’m thinking of. All these plastic and paper boxes needed to keep the food fresh or simply to transport it. Hardcore zero waste spokespeople encourage me to bring my own containers and ask the restaurants to use them. That’s a good solution, but I might not always bring my boxes with me. Sometimes I also would like to buy prepacked meals. I might more often bring my own containers if I had to pay extra for them. The same goes for plastic cutlery. This worked quite fast with plastic bags for many of us.

One key to sustainable living

Sharepack in the Netherlands has a great solution to this. It is a concept of boxes being returned, cleaned, and reused in a number of restaurants. To make this concept really efficient many take away restaurants need to be part of the system. The idea from Sharepack is to build customer loyalty by rewarding the clients every time they return their packs. The customer gets vouchers to use with any other restaurant part of the Sharepack system. It’s easy to see this in the form of an app. In the app you would keep all your vouchers and easily find the nearest restaurant part of the Sharepack system. It could be so easy! To make this kind of smart solutions our new normal fast one of two things need to happen;

  1. We all decided that keeping the waste down is a priority, or

2. New policy makes it the only legal/economically sound option.

If Sharepack connects with the inspired solution of Karma, I wrote about in my last post, there would be true benefits. You save food and you do it without creating additional waste! I hope these two solutions find each other and make a joint concept out of it!

I hope we continue this journey to become an asset to the planet together! I look forward to see your comment on this blog!

Take care of yourself, each other and our planet.
